マザーグースの童謡がよくわかると様々な物語や歌が味わい深く鑑賞できます。今まで何気なく読んでいた絵本が実はマザーグースが元になっていたことが多々あることに気づき、最近はマザーグースの童謡にはまって専ら読んでます。(^_-)-☆　子供にも読んであげたい童謡です。

”Who killed Cock Robin?”
”I,” said the sparrow,
“With my bow and arrow,　私の弓で　私の矢羽で
I killed Cock Robin.”

“Who saw him die?”
“I, ” said the Fly,
“With my little eye,
I saw him die.”

“Who caught his blood?”
“I, ” said the Fish,
“With my little dish,
I caught his blood.”

“Who’ll make the shroud?” 経帷子【きょうかたびら】死者を包む布
“I, ” said the Beetle,
“With my thread and needle,　糸と針で
I’ll make the shroud.”

“Who’ll be the clerk?” 付き人
“I,”  said the lark,　ひばりが言った
“If it’s not in the dark,
I’ll be the clerk.”

”Who’ll be chief mourner?” 喪主
”I,”  said the dove,　ダヴ（小さい野生のハト）
“I’ll mourn for my love,
I’ll be chief mourner.”

“Who’ll dig his grave?”
“I, ” said the owl,
“With my little trowel, こて
I’ll dig his grave.”

“Who’ll be the parson?” 牧師　お坊さん
“I,”  said the rook, ミヤマガラス
“With my little book,
I’ll be the parson.”

“Who’ll toll the bell? 　鐘を打つ
I said the bull,　雄牛
because I can pull,
I’ll toll the bell.
All the birds in the air　空の上から小鳥たちが
Fell a-sighing and a-sobbing,　sobの現在分詞。すすり泣く、
When they heard the bell toll
for poor Cock Robin.
